The first FUF20 event was all about ideas for digital business models. In the premises of our internet agency in Stuttgart, there was a good atmosphere right from the start with finger food and cool drinks. The presentation of the shortlist of submitted ideas for mobile apps and their contributions to digitalization then ensured concentration.

App favorites: Mobile emergency call, e-payment, insurance and e-government

The presentation of the favorites was exciting right at the beginning: The "Heimwegtelefon" app proposal had the most votes, followed by the "Handy Purse". "Insure.Me" and the "Scherbenfrei" app idea were tied for third place. In a lively discussion, the first two proposals were quickly eliminated - the "Home Phone", as too few app functionalities were needed, and the mobile e-payment solution "Handy Purse" due to legal restrictions. In the final, it was insurance vs. cyclists. The idea of "Insure.Me" to photograph items to be insured and insure them directly via a mobile app met with great approval. However, as implementation requires finding an insurance company as a partner, those interested in the app at our digital agency ultimately opted for the non-profit e-government app "Scherbenfrei".

E-government app for clean cities wins the race

This application is designed to report broken glass on the street. The focus should be on usability: With just a few clicks, the responsible authority learns of the location where the shards were found so that they can be cleaned up. This means that not only cyclists benefit from shard-free paths, but also, for example, parents with children, dog owners, joggers and all citizens who value a clean city. Against the backdrop of the environmental policy debate and the promotion of a bicycle-friendly Stuttgart, this idea seemed equally promising and beneficial to the common good. It also makes a major contribution to the digitalization and simplification of administrative processes. It is conceivable that the app functionalities could be extended to other areas such as waste disposal, reporting defective street lighting and expansion to other cities.

Programming: React Native, native app or hybrid app?

Now it is time to decide how the mobile app should be implemented: On the one hand, it can be implemented as a native app, whereby a separate application must be programmed for each smartphone operating system such as iOS, Android etc. However, it is also conceivable to implement it as a hybrid app, or mobile web app, based on the JavaScript framework Angular and HTML5, which is called up via the browser and therefore only needs to be developed once for all end devices. Our internet agency has extensive experience in the development of hybrid apps based on Angular, HTML5 and Cordova. Ideally, the mobile web app behaves just like a native app, i.e. it is not perceived by the user as a mobile website. Alternatively, the web app could also be implemented using the JavaScript library React Native, a JavaScript framework developed by Facebook.
