The requirements

How does the High Performance Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart present itself in a modern way? We answered this fundamental question by doing a big website relaunch together. A particular challenge was the decision to use the latest version of TYPO3 before it's actual release.

Web design from inside the HLRS

Our first design drafts quickly met with the self-image and approval of the HLRS management. Inspired by the colors and open spaces of the high-performance computing center, we developed a color and element system for the website that presents the diverse content of the HLRS in a flexible and modern website layout.

For the new website a powerful navigation system was also developed, to  both explain the extensive content and services offered by HLRS and make them easy to access. Usability and aesthetics were the focus of the design development to achieve a consistent and one off user experience (UX).

The user groups

After all, HLRS has to deal with very different users. Students, scientists, but also clients from the industry and political representatives. It took countless joint drafts before a convincing navigation system was developed. An extensive mega-menu offers a clear and convenient way to go deeper into the main navigation - deliberately kept very slim.

Why TYPO3?

TYPO3 was used, because the HLRS editing team already had experience with this system, and all the extensions required for the project already existed for previous versions of the TYPO3 CMS.

Although the necessary TYPO3 extensions, the address database used by HLRS and the Puma library software had not yet been updated to the new version of the TYPO3 CMS, the decision was made to go with the brand new TPO3 11 version for the relaunch.

Database connection

In addition to the extensive services provided by HLRS, the new TYPO3 website offers a course directory, a staff directory, more efficient management of news and events, as well as a ticket system thats connected to the Puma library database.

Private companies interested in using the supercomputing resources of HLRS for research, technology development or data analysis can also find information and possibilities to reserve dates for additional computing power. An extranet offers comprehensive information and up-to-date advice for users of the services.

Top performance with TYPO3

The result is a modern website based on TYPO3 - easy for editors to use. The modern appearance of the web design reflects the architecture on site and offers users a contemporary user experience. With its connections and functionalities, the website is precisely tailored to the requirements of the HLRS Stuttgart and presents it in a modern and friendly way for the coming years.
